About Alex
A little about me.
My life has been shaped by my experiences as an able-bodied, biracial (Filipina and Acadian), bisexual, cisgender woman. Growing up in a small town in New Brunswick, I often felt a sense of not quite belonging, leading me to fit in and be who I thought others needed me to be. While adaptive, this was not sustainable. As I entered young adulthood, I felt a deep calling to change the social conditions that stifled both myself and others from living authentically.
In 2010, I moved to Toronto and began facilitating leadership workshops and supporting community-led activism in areas such as consumer survivor issues and anti-poverty efforts. However, I soon faced challenges with my mental health and athletic injuries that hindered my physical activity. This difficult period prompted me to recognize how my unintegrated trauma history disconnected me from my inner aliveness, and I began to live from a place of fear and scarcity.
My transformative journey began when I entered a low-barrier psychotherapy program. Through psychotherapy, mindfulness, somatics, and yoga, I learned to cultivate self-compassion and align my life with my values. I embrace these practices daily, though I acknowledge the challenges that still arise. A friend's words from that time resonate with me: “You’re doing the heart work.”
This heart work inspired me to earn a Master of Social Work with a specialization in equity and diversity studies. I am also a Registered Yoga Teacher, Somatic Experiencing Practitioner™, and a certified Brainspotting and Trauma-Informed Stabilization Treatment Therapist. Over the past decade, I have guided psychoeducational workshops, provided case management, and served as a clinician, manager, and clinical supervisor in community-based agencies.
